Little Cahyl sees the light of day on the edge of a pond, watched by the five Founding Fathers, along with thousands of other larvae. While waiting for the ceremony to mark his maturity and allow him to use his wings, Cahyl learns the rules of the Fedelin, lives with the terror of migratory raids and a possible attack from the gordemal, falls in love and meets in secret with Glark, his only true friend, a gordemal who saved him from death. When the Founding Fathers discover that the young fedelin does not bear the mark of any cast, Cahyl wakes up in conflict with his fellow men and sees himself compelled to make a painful decision that will mark his life forever.
