To the student
Dear student
English Horizon is the last book in your Upper secondary series, following on from English My Love, Perspective an English and English News & Views. In it, you will find a lot of familiar features, including a wide range of stimulating texts and activities to help you develop your communication skills in English. However, we have not forgotten that this is an important school year for you, with examinations at the end of it. For this reason we have included plenty of revision material (you’ll find it under the heading “Time for Recap”) and also a systematic treatment of Oral Presentations, which are the focus of Lesson 7 in every unit. You’ll be encouraged to take responsibility for assessing your own learning and performance so that you have a clear idea of your language level as you near the end of your course.
We help you to develop an informed and critical response to literature through the Culture and Civilization lessonins each unit, so that you can apply your skills to unknown texts. As you revise for your exams you may want to consut the index of authors and literary works at the back of the Student’s Book.
The topics in the language lessons (1-4 in each unit) have been chosen for their relevance to your interests as a young adult and an advanced language learner. You’ll find more information about this in the column headed “Social Skills and Learning Styles” in the Overview of Contents. We hope you’ll enjoi them!
As you mau know, there is an Activity Book linked to English Horizons, with further exercise material related to each unit, and with an answer key to enable you to use it independently for self-study.
We hope you have enjoyed your journey along the “Pathway to English” with us over the last few years, and we wish you luck as you embark on the challenges which lie ahead of you.
